Ninja Scroll is a 1993 Japanese animated jidaigeki-chanbara film written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. It is said to have influenced the Wachowskis in the creation of The Matrix franchise. The quality of the animation is spectacular, with dynamic fight sequences and a cast of unique characters, each possessing distinct abilities. This combination makes it an engaging and straightforward film that captivates viewers with its fluid storytelling and striking visuals.
What does it mean to take action?
Jubei, the protagonist, leads a wandering and detached existence, yet he finds himself drawn into a conflict tied to his past. His humanity compels him to confront his former leader, a man consumed by greed and corruption. Jubei’s journey reflects a fundamental question we all face: when confronted with injustice or wrongdoing, do we remain passive, or do we step forward and take action? Like Jubei, we hold the power to engage with the world rather than turning away, and that choice defines who we are.
Do our actions define us more than our words?
Our choices and deeds speak louder than words, shaping not only our personal paths but also the example we set for others. Living with purpose means embracing the reality of our own mortality. Unlike the past, when life was constantly threatened by the sword, many of us now exist in relative safety. Yet, acknowledging that death can come at any moment serves as a reminder not to squander our time. Every moment is an opportunity to engage fully with life rather than merely drifting through it.
Are we truly living or just existing?
Kagero, one of the film’s key characters, struggles against her fate until she finally accepts her emotions and embraces life. This transformation is a lesson in itself: what is the point of existence if we refuse to truly live? Fear, hesitation, and avoidance keep us from experiencing life to the fullest. Ninja Scroll challenges us to ask ourselves—are we actively shaping our lives, or are we letting time slip away?
What do you think? Do you believe taking action is always the right choice, or are there moments when passivity is justified? Share your thoughts in the comments!
