On the Basis of Sex: What Can It Teach Us About Inequity Today?

On the Basis of Sex

We recently watched On the Basis of Sex, recommended once more by my wife. This 2018 American biographical legal drama portrays the life and early cases of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman to serve as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. From the title alone, it’s clear the film centers on the systemic inequity based on gender. However, set in the period from the 1950s to the 1980s, it not only highlights how far society has come in just a few decades but also—quite sadly—how far we remain from achieving a world that genuinely fosters wellness and equity for all.

Inequity on the basis of sex has been a societal norm for thousands of years. While significant progress has undoubtedly been made, instances of gender inequity persist. Transforming this reality will take time, resilience, and perseverance. What is the root of such inequities? It lies in the very structure of society. For mindsets to change, the society that shapes those mindsets must also evolve. Today’s world is still largely shaped by patriarchal perspectives, and many confuse the concept of equity with equality.

Humans, by nature, are inherently unequal—we differ in sex, race, size, and genetics. Inequality in itself is normal; it’s a biological fact. However, accepting inequity, or systemic injustice, is far from normal. To be constrained or marginalized because of these differences is neither acceptable nor sustainable. Alarmingly, there are signs that parts of modern society are regressing—embracing inequity as a norm rather than striving to eliminate it.

Can Embracing Our Differences Lead to a Better Society?

At One Daily Tale, we believe that humanity’s differences hold untapped potential. Our varying perspectives—shaped by diverse cultures, genetics, and brain functions—offer the richness needed to address challenges more effectively. Yet, humans tend to compare themselves to others, creating arbitrary hierarchies as if life were as simplistic as a tier list in a video game. How can we overcome this flawed way of thinking? A global mindset that embraces diversity and fosters understanding across cultures and countries is key.

Without this shift, inequity will remain entrenched, and hatred will continue to be voiced somewhere in the world. To gain the broader perspectives necessary to move forward, we must start by reshaping the foundation of our thoughts—our brain. The rigidity of thought that perpetuates inequity can be counteracted by improving neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and change.

Is Neuroplasticity the Secret to Societal Progress?

Neuroplasticity, the natural flexibility of the brain, peaks in our mid-20s, fueling curiosity, the desire for new experiences, and vitality. As adults, many of us lose this flexibility, becoming set in our ways. However, neuroplasticity can still be cultivated—albeit through intentional effort. Creating healthy habits for the brain, such as engaging in new learning experiences, exercising, and fostering curiosity, can strengthen our mental flexibility and open us up to new ways of thinking.

Though it may seem unrelated, working on our individual brain health can have a ripple effect on society. A society made up of individuals with flexible, open minds is better equipped to challenge entrenched inequities and foster collective progress. Now that you know the basics of what needs to be done, the only question is: Are you ready to take action?
