How does Seiken Densetsu reflect our relationship with nature?
Seiken Densetsu, also known in Europe as Mystic Quest, is a 1991 action role-playing game developed and published by Square for the Game Boy. As a spin-off of the Final Fantasy series and the first game in the Mana series, it blends Zelda-like gameplay with RPG mechanics and the signature lore of both Mana and Final Fantasy, including elements like chocobos.
The Mana series has always been recognized for its strong environmental themes, and this first installment sets the tone clearly. The story is simple yet powerful: the evil Dark Lord of Glaive and his sorcerer assistant, Julius, seek to exploit the Tree of Mana’s power, an act that would destroy it and doom the world. This premise resonates deeply with real-world issues. Humanity’s impact on the environment has grown exponentially, and while not everyone actively participates in its destruction, many remain passive in the face of it. So, what can be done? On an individual level, developing awareness—both of ourselves and of the world—can trigger a ripple effect. Change starts within, but when enough people awaken to the urgency of the situation, the world itself can shift.
Has creativity been sacrificed in favor of profit?
For its time, Seiken Densetsu was a remarkably long game, requiring players to traverse an entire world before confronting the final boss. This, in turn, brings to mind the relentless pace of modern society, where production never stops, and the game industry is no exception. In many domains, quality has taken a backseat to quantity, as financial incentives push companies toward business-driven projects rather than the creative, artistic experiences games once embodied.
With the limited time we have in life, we cannot experience everything, even if we had the privilege to try. And now, with artificial intelligence entering the creative sphere, an even greater flood of content is on the horizon—produced faster and cheaper than ever before. But while some fear AI’s growing influence, perhaps this is an opportunity. Rather than losing our creative identity, this shift could push humanity to refocus on what truly defines us: not just creativity in gaming, but empathy, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of our impact on the future. If we continue to exploit our planet without restraint, we are not just endangering ourselves—we are dooming generations to come.
