I recently watched 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick during a flight to Paris to visit my father. Despite its iconic status, I had never seen it before. My only prior knowledge was the use of Richard Strauss’s famous classical piece, “Also Sprach Zarathustra.” Watching this masterpiece for the first time, I was struck by its resonance with both the mission of my One Daily Tale project and the pressing issues of our modern world.
The Dawn of Consciousness and the Birth of Tools
The movie opens with a profound interpretation of humanity’s first encounter with consciousness. This pivotal moment, symbolized by a black monolith of extraterrestrial origin, represents the awakening of self-awareness and the subsequent use of tools. These tools set humanity on a path toward building civilizations—eventually leading to our present-day society, now intertwined with artificial intelligence (AI).
Reflecting on my personal journey, I saw parallels. A life-altering event forced me to confront the mistakes I had made, and I began examining how we, as individuals, often live in self-centered isolation while remaining faintly aware of societal patterns. This led me to ask: why are we capable of reflecting on our actions at all? This question drew me back to Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens, which inspired much of the foundational thinking behind One Daily Tale.
AI, HAL, and Humanity’s Limitations
Kubrick’s film, created in 1968, remains astonishingly relevant today. Its exploration of AI through HAL, the mission-controlling computer, is particularly poignant. HAL, an AI with a flawless track record, makes its first critical error during a mission to Jupiter. This fictional scenario mirrors the hallucinations and inaccuracies we sometimes see in current AI models.
Even the most knowledgeable individuals cannot grasp the entirety of human knowledge. However, AI has the potential to do so, compiling and analyzing data at an unprecedented scale. This capacity leads to a critical question: can humanity harness AI’s potential to transcend its fragmented and divided state?
A Global Brainstorm: Cultural Diversity as a Strength
At the heart of One Daily Tale lies the belief that humanity’s cultural diversity is its greatest strength—a kind of natural “out-of-the-box” thinking. Each culture offers unique perspectives that can contribute to solving global challenges. Yet, we remain restricted by borders, both physical and linguistic. AI, in contrast, operates beyond these barriers, synthesizing knowledge from every corner of the globe.
Could a global collaboration modeled on this kind of thinking enable humanity to solve its greatest challenges? And could the rise of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) become the unifying force we need to overcome divisions?
The Role of Language in Global Unity
During my travels, I encountered a wide variety of cultures and languages, yet I couldn’t help but reflect on the inequality created by English as the dominant global standard. While convenient for English speakers, this reality imposes disadvantages on non-native speakers, creating subtle feelings of injustice and resentment.
A solution could lie in developing a common global language. Such a language wouldn’t seek to replace existing ones but rather serve as a universal tool for equality in communication. Children would still learn their native tongue, but a shared language could foster global understanding.
With the help of AI, it’s conceivable to design a language optimized for inclusivity—one that works for everyone, regardless of their cultural or linguistic background. The development of this language could mark a significant step toward achieving true global equality.
A Call to Reflect and Share
Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey challenges us to think deeply about humanity’s origins, limitations, and potential. It raises pressing questions about our relationship with technology and the possibility of global unity.
What do you think? Could AI and a universal language help create a more unified and equitable world? Or do you see risks in pursuing such ambitions? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
