Awakenings: A Reflection on Consciousness and Society

Awakenings

Awakenings, directed by Penny Marshall and based on a true story, centers around a doctor who, as one of many researchers, struggles with social interactions and prefers the solitude of his laboratory. He takes a position at a psychiatric hospital where he encounters catatonic patients—individuals who have been unresponsive for years. The doctor begins experimenting with a new drug that miraculously “awakens” the patients, though only temporarily. As their condition regresses, it becomes clear that the drug is not a permanent cure, leaving both the doctor and the audience to reflect on the fleeting nature of life and human experience.

A Parallel to Our Own Lives

This narrative offers a striking metaphor for our own lives. Much like the patients who briefly awaken before returning to their catatonic states, we often go through life unconsciously, deeply influenced by the society around us. Society dictates not just our way of living but, more importantly, our way of thinking. We rarely pause to recognize this until something extraordinary shakes us—whether a tragic event like an accident or the death of a loved one, or a joyful one like the birth of a child. These moments serve as brief awakenings, making us realize what truly matters and reminding us of the finite nature of time. We become acutely aware that life is limited, and the time we have is our only opportunity to make it count.

The Pull of Society’s Current

However, just as the patients inevitably slip back into their catatonic states, we, too, are often swept back into the powerful current of society. It’s not surprising—society, as it is structured, does not typically celebrate or support those who deviate from the norm. It pushes us to conform, to fit neatly into pre-established roles, leaving little room for true self-awareness or individual growth.

The Value of Awakening

Yet, even these brief moments of awareness are not without value. Each experience, each glimpse of consciousness, teaches us something. Even if we only achieve this state once, it means that it is possible to attain. With repeated efforts, we can increase our awareness, allowing us to take small steps toward living authentically—acting in ways that align with our true selves rather than the expectations imposed by society.
