Can Music Like Tears in Heaven and Layla Teach Us About Grief and Love?

How does tragedy shape artistic expression?

Eric Clapton is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is regarded as one of the most successful and influential guitarists in rock music, and I believe I first listened to his songs when my brother started playing the guitar.

My favorite song from Clapton is doubtless Tears in Heaven, a song he wrote shortly after the death of his four-year-old son. At that time, Clapton was struggling with drug addiction and alcohol, and after his son’s death, he began attending AA meetings. No one is perfect on this earth, and though social media has a tendency to only show some individuals’ rapid rise to success—flawless and perfect—often it hides a reality that those same individuals conceal. Writing this song helped Clapton overcome his grief and produced a masterpiece. Tragic events like this happen every day; some are accidents, while others are the result of human greed and the relentless pursuit of power, often twisted by the hands of a few. Is our time so futile that we must spend it destroying the very lives we have?

Can love and longing inspire timeless art?

Layla is perhaps Clapton’s most famous song, inspired by the classical Persian poem The Story of Layla and Majnun by Nizami Ganjavi. The book deeply moved Clapton, as it tells the tale of a young man who falls hopelessly in love with a beautiful yet unattainable woman, ultimately losing his mind because he cannot be with her. At the time, Clapton was secretly in love with George Harrison’s wife, Pattie Boyd, making this story particularly meaningful for him. Creativity can only emerge from what already exists within our minds. Our brains have a powerful ability to form connections and associations, but to connect the dots, we must first gather knowledge. This is why continuous learning and curiosity must be cultivated at all times. Who knows what new ideas might suddenly emerge if we feed our minds with diverse experiences?

What truly matters in the time we have?

Our time on earth is limited, and while we can never be perfect, why not strive to spend our lives doing our best—being kind and loving in our relationships—as long as we still can? Learning and curiosity foster self-awareness, which in turn enhances creativity, empathy, and our ability to see the world from different perspectives. These qualities are crucial in a society still ruled by a select few who manipulate it for their own benefit, often leaving innocent people as casualties of their greed.
