Final Fantasy Tactics is a 1997 tactical role-playing game by Square, released in 1997. This is the first installment of Final Fantasy as a tactical RPG, yet it has been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. It is also the first entry set in the fictional world later known as Ivalice, where Final Fantasy XII takes place. The game is a true masterpiece, with a deep story, a great soundtrack, and a truly refined game system, as expected from a tactical RPG.
What Can the Job System Teach Us About Growth?
The job and class system in Final Fantasy Tactics is built upon Square’s extensive experience with previous Final Fantasy games. Interestingly, a cameo character from the main series appears as a playable unit with unique abilities. In real life, this system offers a valuable lesson: in order to become stronger and more skilled, we must carefully choose our role and specialization.
Just like in the game, some individuals stand out as extraordinary—heroes of war, elite athletes, visionary scientists, or exceptional leaders. However, let’s be honest: we cannot all become the next Michael Jordan, Einstein, Gandhi, or David Goggins. Instead, what we can do is embrace growth by exploring different skills and experiences before committing to a path. In Final Fantasy Tactics, each job class has a clear description of its abilities, but in reality, we often let prejudices and societal expectations shape our choices before we even try. Staying curious and open-minded is the key to real discovery.
How Do We Balance Exploration and Specialization?
Once we’ve explored various possibilities, the next step is to focus on the few things that allow us to perform at our best. The challenge is to find this balance: we need curiosity to stay open to new ideas, but also specialization to develop true expertise. This concept is beautifully explained in Mastery by Robert Greene, which emphasizes the importance of taking small, deliberate steps toward discovering our calling.
The hardest part is knowing what truly resonates with us. However, this journey becomes clearer when we create an environment that supports brain health—one that fosters mental clarity, resilience, and self-awareness. By taking care of our mind and body, we set the stage for self-discovery and personal growth.
Is It Ever Too Late to Find Your True Path?
We are all different, and unfortunately, our time is limited. This means we must make conscious decisions about where to invest our energy. However, it is never too late to embrace who we truly are. The first step is to search for it—to explore, question, and gradually uncover our purpose.
What about you? Have you ever changed paths or discovered a passion later in life? How do you balance exploration and mastery in your own journey? Let’s discuss!
