How Does Zootopia Challenge Our Perceptions of Prejudice and Neuroplasticity?

How do our brains shape our understanding of the world?

Zootopia is a 2016 American animated buddy cop comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Set in a world of anthropomorphic animals, it follows an unlikely partnership between a small rabbit police officer and a cunning con artist fox as they work together to unravel a hidden threat. The movie explores profound themes of prejudice, stereotypes, and the importance of understanding different perspectives in a diverse society.

It is an undeniable fact that every human being is unique from birth. Beyond genetic differences, our brains are shaped even before we are born, influenced by the environment our mother lives in—the culture she embraces, the food she eats, the language she speaks, even the air she breathes. And yet, we often fail to acknowledge the depth of these influences. Our natural tendency is to perceive only what is immediately visible, unless we consciously push ourselves to think beyond what we see.

Why is it crucial to embrace different cultures early on?

With such a vast range of perspectives in the world, it is essential to be exposed to different ways of thinking as early as possible. Neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and rewire itself, is especially potent in childhood. The more we encounter diverse viewpoints and cultural experiences, the more we develop self-awareness and open-mindedness. Recognizing that different people hold different perspectives doesn’t mean we must label them as right or wrong. It’s not about “us and them”—it’s about us, as one interconnected humanity.

How does our environment shape our mindset?

Living in Japan, I was struck by how much my recent trip to France made me notice the contrasts between the two cultures. While these differences may seem “obvious” to those familiar with both countries, they remain mere stereotypes for those who have never experienced them firsthand. One particular observation was the faster pace of life in France compared to Japan. Our surroundings profoundly shape our mood, attitude, and thoughts. We also know that language structures the brain differently, influencing the way we think. But at the core, we all share the same neurological foundation. By actively working on our neuroplasticity, we can learn to see the world with broader, more open eyes.
