Living creatures share what is called a survival instinct. When you think about it, it’s rather mysterious.
This instinct drives the richest people on the planet to search for ways to achieve immortality—until it becomes too late for them.
It leads others to live vicariously through their children.
And the irony of this instinct is that, unless it is triggered, human beings often behave in ways that lead to shorter lifespans—at least in wealthy countries.
This fear of death was the foundation of many myths and religions and is still exploited by certain individuals in power.
Science fiction often portrays alien civilizations that threaten humankind and ultimately cause people to unite under a common goal.
Yet many fail to see that global warming—while lacking the drama of man-eating monsters from outer space—is a real and pressing reason to unite.
