A Collective Responsibility

Whether they wanted it or not, every new Esper brought into the world was part of a whole: a family, a clan, an elemental region, the civilization of the Espers as a whole…

Until very recently, it had been inconceivable for Espers of different elements to even attempt to communicate with one another.

Simply because of their different appearances or customs, and because they spoke their own languages, they all regarded one another as barbarians.

The world before the Chaos War rested on extremely fragile agreements between the different regions, founded on collective trust.

Yet biases had not disappeared. On the contrary, tensions were becoming increasingly frequent and intense.

A collective responsibility, on the scale of an entire civilization, had therefore become necessary to maintain a balance with nature, whose resources were essential to their civilization, and also to preserve peace for everyone.

The complexity of their civilization had nevertheless created the inertia of a system far too heavy to change quickly.

Even as the consequences of using magic on the planet’s ecosystem demanded that they act as quickly as possible.

Some Espers believed that individual responsibility, taken on by a sufficient number of individuals, could bring about the collective responsibility they had been waiting for.

This idea would become one of the pillars of One Daily Tale
