Actions speak louder than words.

Gladiator Actions speak louder than words

Gladiator tells the story of Maximus, a Roman general who is betrayed by Commodus, the son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. After his family is murdered, he is reduced to slavery. Sold into the life of a gladiator, Maximus’s experience as a general, his strength, and his leadership soon begin to shine through.

Until the famous scene where he reveals his name to Commodus, Maximus never speaks of who he once was or his former status. However, his attitude toward his fellow gladiators, along with his combat prowess—honed through years of real battle experience—earns him not only the respect of those around him but also the admiration of the arena’s crowd.

Actions speak louder than words.

We can preach as much as we want, but our actions must align with our words. Too often, we see parents trying to educate their children, yet their actions contradict their teachings. When we witness someone displaying gratitude, compassion, or conviction in their actions, it naturally draws us to learn more about that person’s philosophy or way of life.

On the other hand, someone with a sound philosophy that is not reflected in their actions is unlikely to earn the same trust.

Keeping balance is crucial

This is why balance is so important: if we take extreme actions, we may be seen as extreme, making it hard for others to relate to us. Of course, balance looks different for everyone. Some may be more inclined toward cognitive learning than fitness, or find social interactions easier than taking on new challenges. The essence of balance is that we should also focus on areas where we struggle. This helps develop the brain’s plasticity, which in turn increases our awareness of the world and society around us.
