Can Kiroro’s Songs Help Us Reflect on Life, Love, and Gratitude?

Kiroro is a Japanese pop duo from Okinawa that debuted in 1996. I listened to them when I was still in high school, particularly their songs “Mirai e,” “Best Friend,” and “Akikaze.” I loved the simplicity of their music—though some might call it naive, why complicate things that don’t need to be?

How does “Mirai e” remind us of the fleeting nature of time?

It seems that “Mirai e” was written when the vocalist, still in middle school, believed her mother was very sick and composed the song for her. Reflecting on our own mortality can deepen our appreciation for the time we have with our loved ones, especially the unique bond we share with our mothers. Too often, we take a mother’s love for granted, believing—perhaps unconsciously—that it will last forever. Love, I believe, does not always require words or grand gestures, but while we still have the chance, why not nurture that bond more consciously?

Can gratitude reshape our brains and our world?

“Best Friend” is a beautiful tribute to friendship and can also serve as a reminder to practice gratitude. Gratitude, as a form of meditation, has been scientifically proven to offer profound benefits, particularly by enhancing brain function. I firmly believe that by fostering a more adaptable and resilient brain—one rich in neuroplasticity—we can cultivate greater awareness and empathy. Why not take a moment today to express gratitude to your best friend, simply for their presence in your life?

What does “Akikaze” teach us about regret and responsibility?

I have always admired the way the guitar melody and vocals intertwine in “Akikaze.” The song explores the pain of separation from a loved one, reminding us that our time on this earth is finite. Every moment we experience, every decision we make, shapes the course of our lives. Do we want to live burdened by regret? I believe we carry a responsibility—not only to ourselves but to future generations—to make choices that align with our values and to lead by example.

What are your thoughts? Have you ever connected with a song in a way that made you reflect deeply on life, love, or gratitude? Let’s discuss!
