Can “L’Hymne de nos campagnes” Still Awaken Us in the Age of AGI and Environmental Collapse?

Are we listening to messages, or just playing the music?

I first heard about Tryo when I was in engineering school back in France. While at that time I was not quite self-aware on many aspects, I found it deeply ironic that many of my fellow students admired this band promoting environmental consciousness, even though our own school trained engineers who often ended up working for companies that contribute directly to environmental destruction. I’m not sure whether they were already aware of this contradiction, but just like when I wrote about Michael Jackson’s songs Heal the World or Man in the Mirror, or John Lennon’s Imagine, it seems to be true that when individuals listen to activist artists or songs, they feel they have fulfilled their duty simply by doing so—and believe themselves part of a movement they haven’t truly joined.

Has anything really changed since 1998?

L’Hymne de nos campagnes is one of Tryo’s most famous songs, released in 1998. Its music video illustrates how industrialization has ravaged our landscapes, abused animals, annihilated forests, and polluted oceans with oil from cargo shipwrecks. That was over 30 years ago. Have things truly changed? Recent decisions by the most powerful country in the world suggest otherwise. Its leaders speak of colonizing Mars—perhaps to avoid acknowledging the irreversible damage already done to Earth. Instead of slowing down, reflecting, and acting responsibly, the pace of destruction accelerates. And now, with yet another unchecked force—Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—the same dream continues. AGI offers the ultimate power: a technology that could make its first developer the uncontested master of the world, able to rewrite history and dominate militarily, casting all others aside.

Are we trapped in comfort, while privilege drives the future?

Most of us just want to live our lives—not asking for much more than some joy and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the society we share. Yet, those who have held privilege for thousands of years continue to guard their advantages, often with little regard for the rest of humanity. Of course, not everything is black or white. But awareness changes the game. The more people grasp the reality of our situation, the greater the chance that things might finally shift toward a better direction. At One Daily Tale, our belief is simple: a healthier brain grants us the capacity to access that awareness. By developing healthy habits, we can rewire our neural pathways to perceive and appreciate the beauty of the present. When that happens, power, greed, and social status may start to lose their grip—and then, and only then, will it truly make sense to change the system for the sake of a better world.

What about you—have you ever felt like listening to conscious music gave you the illusion of action? Do you think awareness alone can shift the trajectory we’re on? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
