La Haine: How extreme points of view are not the solution to solve issues at their core

La Haine is a 1995 French social thriller film written, co-edited, and directed by Mathieu Kassovitz. The film chronicles a day and night in the lives of three friends from a poor immigrant neighbourhood in the suburbs of Paris. The concept that “hatred breeds hatred” lies at the core of this movie, and it can, sadly, be extended to even more destructive situations—those we call wars.

What if freedom and responsibility were finally thought of as a necessary pair?

Right now, as the escalation of the war in Ukraine grows even more intense, France and other countries in the EU are strengthening their military capabilities. Again. But who will truly benefit from this rearmament? Economies built for war have historically led to the sacrifice of the poorest and most vulnerable populations—not only physically, but also mentally. While immediate solutions are necessary, preparing for more war is not necessarily the best path forward. World War II ended with two atomic bombs dropped on Japan, killing mostly civilians—people who had no involvement in the global conflict. The freedom to choose how to respond and act lies in the hands of world leaders. Yet asking citizens to fight for causes that will ultimately sacrifice them is a bitter irony that has persisted throughout human history.

So far, so good… Until when? Until when are we going to close our eyes to reality?

The fact that I’m able to write these words is a sign that time still remains. No situation should be considered lost as long as people can choose, speak, and share their intentions. But as long as nations continue to view others as threats or enemies—an attitude that serves as fertile ground for totalitarianism—nothing will ever truly change. What, then, is the purpose of highly paid politicians? Shouldn’t their discussions aim to make the world as a whole a better place? Not merely continue to act blindly, focused solely on what happens within the borders of their own countries?

What do you think—can freedom ever exist without responsibility?
