Sakanaction just released its MV for the song 怪獣, which serves as the opening for the anime Chi. The anime’s broadcast concluded this Sunday in Japan. Since watching Chi, I have enjoyed this song, its rhythm, and, most importantly, the message conveyed through its music video. The MV aligns perfectly with the lyrics and the core themes of Chi. As always, interpretations may vary, but the underlying critique remains clear: going against the current of society is a daunting challenge. However, knowledge provides the means to navigate these struggles, and ultimately, it will be future generations who decide which path to follow.
How Does Society Trap Us in a Cycle of Conformity?
In the MV, Sakanaction’s vocalist attempts to escape the traps laid by society, which manifest in various forms through the individuals he encounters. As he runs through a maze, he faces obstacles representing hierarchy, money, and lust—all forces used as tools of pressure and manipulation in today’s world. Just as the walls open, a sign appears, marked with the word “Norm.” It represents the easy path—the one that allows individuals to fit in, but at the cost of abandoning their own beliefs and convictions. Following this route means doing what “everyone else” does, surrendering personal identity in favor of social acceptance.
Yet, the road to staying true to one’s convictions is fraught with resistance. Often, this resistance comes not only from apparent adversaries but also from those we consider allies—sometimes even from our own friends and family. This illustrates how difficult it is to break free from societal expectations when those closest to us are bound by the same constraints.
Can Curiosity and Knowledge Liberate Us?
A pivotal moment in the MV is when the vocalist receives a pen, symbolizing the power of knowledge and the importance of younger generations. Children, with their innate curiosity and innocent perspective, remind adults to question the world around them. They challenge us to rethink what we accept as “normal” and push us toward deeper reflection.
By learning more—about history, about how our brain functions, and about the patterns shaping society—we can gain the critical awareness necessary to make better choices. With education comes a reduction in destructive behaviors, not only toward our planet but also toward other living beings.
Will Future Generations Carry the Torch?
In the final act of the MV, a child offers the protagonist a pen that ultimately enables his escape. This moment reinforces the idea that children, with their pure and untainted vision, can lead the way to liberation. Another younger individual receives an egg, a powerful symbol of life and potential, signifying a call to future generations to continue the fight—for the planet, for a better society, and for the ideals we value.
As mortals, we cannot foresee the full consequences of our actions. We may never know how our choices shape the future. But if we truly love our children, isn’t taking action while we still can the least we owe them?
What do you think? Can knowledge and the perspective of younger generations truly help us break free from societal constraints? Share your thoughts in the comments!
