The Inspirational World of Yowamushi Pedal by Wataru Watanabe

Yowamushi Pedal

I first encountered the manga Yowamushi Pedal when I joined Cannondale, an American bicycle company known for its high-performance bikes used in events like the UCI Road World Championships. Famous cyclists such as Peter Sagan have ridden these bikes. At the time, I didn’t even know how to ride a standard bicycle—I simply hadn’t had the opportunity. But the passion of my colleagues, all avid cyclists, inspired me to start riding as well.

The Story of Yowamushi Pedal

Yowamushi Pedal, literally meaning “Weakling Pedal,” tells the story of Sakamichi Onoda, a young otaku whose name fittingly translates to “hill road.” Despite owning only a basic “mamachari” (a heavy city bike often used for grocery shopping), Onoda developed incredible climbing strength by biking daily to Akihabara, Tokyo’s mecca for otaku culture, on a route filled with challenging slopes.

As the series progresses, Onoda becomes the climber for his high school cycling team, showcasing his resilience and determination. The manga embodies the nekketsu shonen spirit, common in sports-themed stories, where characters possess an extraordinary willpower and unique abilities. It also emphasizes the importance of teamwork, a cornerstone of team cycling races like the Tour de France or Giro d’Italia.

The Benefits of Cycling and Exercise

As a sports manga, Yowamushi Pedal highlights the necessity of regular exercise, particularly two types:

  1. Cardiovascular Training: Activities like cycling, running, or rowing that improve heart health.
  2. Resistance Training: Strength-building exercises such as weightlifting or bodyweight activities like bouldering.

Cycling stands out as being gentler on the body compared to running, which can strain joints like the knees and ankles.

Zone 2 Cardiovascular Training

One effective way to enhance cardiovascular health is through Zone 2 cardio, where your heart rate remains in Zone 2. To calculate this, subtract your age from 180. For example, a 40-year-old would aim for a heart rate of around 140 beats per minute. If you don’t have a heart rate monitor, Zone 2 is when you can still speak comfortably without gasping for breath, but any more exertion would make talking difficult.

Why Exercise Matters

Exercise has countless benefits:

  • Physical Health: Promotes heart health, reduces injury risk (when paired with rest), and improves sleep quality.
  • Mental Well-being: Activities like cycling and running create a forward motion, which positively impacts your mindset, encouraging progress in life.
  • Brain Health: Exercise directly benefits the brain, influencing mood, social interactions, and the ability to learn. A healthier brain leads to a healthier life overall.

Final Thoughts

Yowamushi Pedal doesn’t just inspire readers with its gripping story; it also reminds us of the joy and value of cycling and staying active. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a beginner like I was, it’s never too late to start.
