Transcending One’s Own Nature

The primary instincts of the Esper species pushed them to act naturally for their individual survival before anything else.

Even though the Espers were now capable of using magic and had developed a civilization that, from the outside, had little left in common with the time when they had been nomadic in search of food, this instinct for survival and this individualism were still very much at the heart of each of their lives.

And indeed, how could one not think that one is at the center of the world when the only way one can see the world is through one’s own eyes?

This was one of Faya’s reflections, the Shape of Willpower and Grand Element of Fire.

Faya had come to believe that, in order to create a society as a whole in which harmony and fairness between peoples were truly present, the Espers had to transcend their own nature.

“We must be able to overcome these natural instincts and become aware of our responsibility as members of a civilization that now numbered billions…”

“And do so, despite the differences between the lands.”

“An individual cannot change the world all by themselves… But if no one changes, things will not evolve either.”

“We must therefore act on both fronts at the same time: the individual and the system.”

“Transcend one’s own nature in order to transcend society itself.”
