If the debate between nature and nurture has endured through the ages, looking at it from the perspective of brain development makes it clear that nurture plays a significant role in shaping who a person becomes as an adult.

Even in the womb, before the cognitive parts of the brain have fully developed, the emotional centers are already beginning to learn.

This is why children are so full of life, have an insatiable curiosity, and seem completely absorbed in their own world.

They are living sponges, brimming with wonder and innocence.

Then comes the environment they grow up in—the presence or absence of love from their caregivers, the compassion or lack thereof from their teachers…

So many factors come into play, each one shaping the child, day by day, into the adult they will eventually become.

As adults, we have much to learn from that innocence, don’t you think?
