I Can, Therefore I Think

Faya, the Shape of Willpower, was well known for never mincing her words and often saying aloud what everyone else was only thinking.

Like the other Shapes, she had begun applying the principles of One Daily Tale to develop her own StarDust.

She therefore had to develop her Water element, connected to Wisdom, and, to do so, she studied her own civilization, that of the Espers, through books.

One book in particular, which told of ancient civilizations that had vanished, moved her to tears.

“How is it possible for a species to be so unaware of its own mistakes, and of the consequences for its environment and for others…”

“But one thing seems clear to me now: developing the StarDust makes something possible that was not common before.”

“It allows us to say: ‘I can, therefore I think.’”

“Because until now, it was more like: ‘I can, therefore I do.’ And all of this without thinking about future generations, the resources being consumed, or the damage caused to the environment.”

“When will we finally learn from the mistakes of the past, mistakes that devastated vast stretches of land, oceans, and nature, upon which we ourselves depend?”

“We now have the ability to act differently. Why? Because we now understand the StarDust.”

“I can, therefore I think.”

    What Do We Really Need?

It was a question that often came up in the debates at the Great Library of Esperia, which, since the end of the Chaos War, had served Espers from all over the world as a place to exchange ideas, discuss, and try to find compromises on difficult issues. The Chaos War had indeed brought to…

    Investing Time Every Day

The civilization of the Espers before the Chaos War had gradually become accustomed to having everything done almost instantly. Waiting was becoming unbearable for many of them, and a long-term perspective seemed like nothing more than a vague memory of the past. Now that the StarDust was better understood, however, it seemed obvious that investing…

    Perceiving Reality

The development of the civilization of the Espers, greatly accelerated by the use of magic for decades, had gradually distanced them from reality. Choosing Is Difficult

Faya, the Shape of Willpower and a great element of Fire, had chosen this title to lead a debate about taking responsibility and the choices each Esper had to make regarding it. Even though the end of the Chaos War had brought a brief moment of communion for all, with the StarDust appearing before everyone’s…

    In All Simplicity

It is very easy and natural to believe that we are the center of the Earth. And in a society increasingly concerned with individual freedoms, this way of thinking can only spread. Yet it is just as easy to take even a few minutes to reflect on the situation as a whole. By zooming out,…

    Strength in Unity

The Seven Shapes had become the symbol that there is strength in unity. Each elemental land was represented, and while each element had its strengths and weaknesses, the Espers had understood that the union of the elements could create a force far greater than all of them separately. On an individual level, this developed the…

    Content with the Essentials

Swept up in the whirlwind of everyday life, it is easy to lose sight of what is so often right before our eyes. Magic had made the lives of many Espers far more comfortable than those of even the most powerful kings of times past. But did that mean that all Espers were now happier…

    Perceiving Problems

Vati, the Shape of Wisdom, had an important responsibility: she was, for the Espers around the world, the symbol of a new society founded on new foundations. As the Shape of Wisdom, one of her roles was to help the Espers perceive the existing problems. Why? Quite simply because we can only begin trying to…
